Around 140 delegates from businesses, charities and organisations are set to attend a conference in Beddington which focuses on the topic of domestic abuse.

The Sutton Women’s Centre will be hosting the event on March 28, with expected guests including MPs Paul Scully and Tom Brake.

The conference will give attendees the opportunity to listen to survivors of abuse, explore issues with coercive control and its impact.

There will also be discussions surrounding local strategies within the borough on how to tackle the problem.

Several figures who have signed up to speak include Sutton’s MPs, Sutton’s lead councillor against domestic abuse Jean Crossby and Detective Inspector Chuks Gwam.

Anna Cummins, chairwoman of trustees at Sutton Women’s Centre, said: “With over 120 women accessing our domestic abuse services we fully understand the devastating and long-term impact of coercive control.

“We know that abuse starts with perpetrators isolating women from their families and support networks, exploiting them, depriving them of independence and regulating their everyday behaviour.

“This conference is an opportunity for delegates from the public sector, community organisations, charities and local women to better understand what coercive control is, the tactics used by perpetrators and the impact to victims.

“This understanding is vital if we are to provide the right support and services to victims.”

The event will be held at The Grange in Beddington Park.
