A serial killer was working in Watford - and even asked a colleague for help to buy a knife – when he committed his third murder.

Mane Driza – also known as Tony Montana – the fictional character played by Al Pacino in the 1983 movie Scarface – was found guilty at the Old Bailey on Wednesday of murdering Stefan Bledar Mone at a flat in Wembley in 1999 – Driza’s fifth conviction of murder in total.

Mr Mone was found with more than 120 wounds after being attacked with a cheese knife, lock knife, and a pick axe, on the morning of June 22 1999. He was later found dead by his pregnant girlfriend, Zoe Blay.

He was killed following a disagreement with his Albanian compatriot over a wedding ring which Driza believed had been stolen from him.

Driza, then 21, told a colleague in Watford he was going to kill Mr Mone, and he even asked one of his workmates to buy him a knife. He got his workmate to drive him to Northwood station, asking to stop at a shop to purchase a weapon.

He was still with his colleague when Driza began repeating ‘I’m going to kill him’ but he thought he was not being serious.

Driza got on the tube at Northwood leaving at Sudbury Hill before heading for Mr Mone’s home.

The killer, who had already shot dead a father and son in his homeland, Albania, in April 1997, then carried out his vicious attack on Mr Mone.

Driza was quickly identified as the chief suspect but he fled to Italy.

While in Italy, he shot two men dead in a bar in Catania, and would have likely killed a third man had his gun not jammed.

He was arrested the following day and in December 2001, he was sentenced to 25 years for the two murders he committed in Albania. On June 2002, he was jailed for 30 years for two counts of conspiracy to murder, and attempted murder, in Italy.

Back in the UK, the Met have been working to bring Driza back to face trial for Mr Mone’s murder.

Eventually, on May 31 last year, Driza was extradited to the UK and charged with the father to be’s murder.

The 41-year-old, of no fixed address, was found guilty at the Old Bailey and will be sentenced on April 3.
