Police are appealing for help to identify a man wanted after a series of car hijackings in Eltham and Woolwich.

CCTV footage shows the suspect trying to use a stolen bank card from a victim of one of the car thefts.

Four car thefts took place over six days earlier this year.

On each occasion, a man impersonating a police officer asked the victim to get out of their car before jumping in and driving away.

The man in the stolen car was followed by a second suspect in another car.

One of the victims was a heavily pregnant woman, who remains shaken by the ordeal.

The incident happened early morning on January 17 in Middle Park Avenue.

The 33-year-old woman was driving a white BMW 520 towards the Yorkshire Grey roundabout when she became aware of another BMW, which then activated a blue flashing light in the windscreen.

News Shopper:

Thinking it was police, she pulled over and a man got out of the black BMW 4x4, approached her and identified himself as a police officer and showed a lanyard with a leather cover, but she did not see a crest or badge.

He asked her to leave the car and he then got in the driver's seat and drove off, followed by the black BMW.

Another incident occurred on January 21, when a cancer patient was waiting to go to a doctor's appointment.

Jacquie Howell, 54, had stopped in Glenesk Road near Eltham Park South around midday when a man knocked on her window.

She told News Shopper: “I was on my phone when a man started knocking on my window, he just kept knocking so I wound the window down. He said that I had an oil leak at the back of the car.

“I just assumed he was a dog walker, there wasn’t any reason to think that anything was wrong.”

News Shopper:

The man kept persisting until Jacquie got out of the car, and luckily she had her phone and purse on her.

Jacquie reached the back of the car and a man came running across the road, got in her car and drove off, then the man who had distracted her drove off in a separate vehicle.

The third took place just a day after on January 22 in the early hours of the morning when a man reported his vehicle had been stolen by two men impersonating police officers.

He was travelling along Academy Road in Woolwich when he noticed a dark people carrier behind him which flashed a blue light indicating him to stop.

Once again, a man approached the car and asked the owner to get out. The man then got into the driver's seat and drove off, followed by another man in the people carrier.

Police have been asked details on the fourth incident.

The Met Police are asking that if you recognise this man at all to call 101.
