Work is set to begin on a £165,000 revamp of a toddler and young children’s playground in Wandsworth Common, it has been announced.

The play area in Chivalry Road is undergoing a “major facelift”, which includes new landscaping and new safe play surfaces.

Modern play equipment will also include benches, climbing frames, picnic tables, see-saws, slides and timber swings.

Wandsworth Council say the works will begin on April 23, closing the playground for six weeks while the project is carried out.

For the time being this will mean children and families will have to use the playgrounds next to the Skylark Café, St Mark’s Church and the Windmill Nursery.

Cllr Steffi Sutters, the council’s environment spokeswoman, said: “he designs for this playground and the play equipment it will feature were chosen by local people when we staged our public consultation last year so these improvements should be very popular with local families and our youngest residents.

“Combined with the improvements at the nearby ball games area which is aimed at slightly older children and teenagers, it means this corner of Wandsworth Common has something to offer young people of all ages.”

It follows a £130,000 investment scheme into the nearby all-weather ball games area in Chivalry Road as well.

Other playgrounds which have, or will be, revamped include Battersea Park, Falcon Park, Furzedown Rec, Godley Gardens and others.

The announcement was made on April 11.
