The Surrey Youth Games took place this weekend with over 200 teams hailing from all boroughs in the country competing.

Young people from every borough and district in Surrey came together to take part in what organisers dubbed "the county’s largest annual multi-sport event".

Regional non-profit Active Surrey, who staged the event for free at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, said that around 1,500 children took part across two days of competition and activities.

A spokesperson for Active Surrey described the primary results of the event:

"Waverley were awarded the prestigious Gerry Ceaser Fair Play Trophy for the attitude and sportsmanship demonstrated by their young people across the weekend.

"Nominations were made by those running every sport, as well as each of the borough / district team organisers.

"Alongside the trophy Waverley won £250 of sports equipment from the Surrey Playing Fields Association, just edging Guildford into second spot.

Epsom and Ewell placed third.

The borough was praised by organisers for its recruitment drive ahead of the games in particular, which Active Surrey said had helped get hundreds of children physically active in the process.

"The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games are there to give ‘non sporty’ children a chance and Epsom and Ewell had done a particularly good job of getting children into training with 426 places taken up prior to the Games," a spokesperson said.

As for the medals table itself, the top prize was claimed by Spelthorne, who topped the medals haul with five golds, five silvers and three bronze.

"In second place were Elmbridge who scooped three golds, while third-placed Epsom and Ewell just edged out a terrific performance from Tandridge who punched above their weight to finish fourth," Active Surrey said.

On Twitter, a spokesperson for Epsom and Ewell Borough Council (EEBC) praised everyone who competed in the borough's team:

"Congratulations to all our young people who represented the borough at the weekend's #SpecsaversSurreyYouthGames - #TeamEpsomEwell you've done the borough proud! Thank you to everyone involved."

James Sawyer, Regional Chair for title sponsors Specsavers said: "On behalf of everyone in our stores across Surrey, thank you to all those who made the 2019 Specsavers Surrey Youth Games an amazing weekend.

"Every child who took part was a winner in our eyes, and it was great to see so many families cheering on their loved ones.

"We also wish to express our gratitude to the team at Active Surrey and every local district and borough council that get involved year after year to make this amazing event a memorable part of Surrey’s sporting calendar."

Campbell Livingston, Director of Games organisers Active Surrey meanwhile said: "Young people wouldn't get the chance to try out new activities without the support of local councils and the coaches they appoint.

"Alongside sponsors like Specsavers and Arriva, a small army of volunteers also give up their time so that young people new to a sport can ‘have a go’...On behalf of those taking part in the Games, we'd like to say a big thank you to everyone for making a difference."
