A Bexley dad whose daughter almost died due to surgical complications has helped raise more than £35,000 for the charity which helped him stay close to her throughout the ordeal.

Justin Beech, 49, along with the other eight members of the Blazin Saddles crew managed to trek 500 miles across the country last in aid of the Ronald McDonald House, a charity which offers accommodation to parents of ill children in hospitals.

The crew arrived at their final destination in Camberwell on Saturday, June 15, where they were greeted by proud family members and friends to celebrate their monumental achievement.

Speaking to News Shopper, Justin's wife, Zoe, explained that the family have a very personal connection with the Ronald McDonald charity after their daughter fell seriously ill in 2017.

"Our daughter Millie had to go into Kings College Hospital for an operation to prevent bowel cancer a couple of years ago, but there were complications and she ended up being in their for nine hours.

"When she came around from the operation, she was complaining of really bad pain in her right leg.

"The doctors checked it out but they said everything was fine.

"She became very distressed during the night but in the morning she seemed to have calmed down.

"But when the nurse checked on her, she was actually unconscious from internal bleeding," she said.

This unfortunately led to a six-week stay in intensive care for the poor girl after doctors diagnosed her with Compartment Syndrome, a condition which pressure in one part of the body results in insufficient blood being supplied to tissue within that body part.

Although the family live in Sidcup, Zoe said the emotional ordeal left both parents incapable of leaving her bedside.

Because of this, they were promptly offered a space in the nearby Ronald McDonald House.

"We’re a really tight team the three of us.

"I wanted to stay with her because I couldn't trust to leave her and He wanted to be there as well so they found us a room there.

"It was an absolute life-saver," said Zoe.

Once Millie was on the mend, Justin began contacting his cycling buddies with the idea for the cross-country trip, which has since raised £35,700.

"It’s not just about raising money though, it’s also about raising awareness about this service.

"With the Ronald McDonald House it’s not just a room you get, it’s also the support you get from families in similar situations.

"You try to help each other," said Zoe.

The Blazin Saddles crew is comprised of Justin Beech, Lee Etherington, Gary Cann, Matt Finch, Lee Williams, Stuart Sinclair, Lee Ford, Phil Cox and Stuart Clarkson.
