Charlton’s EFL League Cup exit at the hands of Forest Green has re-affirmed his belief some of his younger players need to be loaned out.

With the transfer window for lower league sides still open, the Addiks boss made it clear he thought some of his younger players would benefit from playing regular first team football down the football pyramid.

Fielding a much-changed side, Bowyer gave a chance to the likes of Albie Morgan, Alfie Doughty, George Lapslie, Macauley Bonne, Wilberforce Ocran, Brendan Sarpon-Wiredu, and Sam Field to showcase their talent.

A chance Bowyer feels many of them failed to take.

“They played a good League Two side and some of them struggled at times,” Bowyer said.

“I think a lot of the younger lads were sloppy in possession, not taking care.

“Basic things, and you look at them and it doesn’t look like it bothers them if they give the ball away, its frustrating.

“Playing it across the back, not playing in front of the man to step on to, weight of pass, small details make big difference.

“In the Championship, it’s a different physicality, a quicker pace, they aren’t ready for it, it’s blatantly obvious to see.

“It’ll be good for them to go out on-loan, learn the game, in and out of possession, good to learn.”

One player who the Addicks boss has high hopes for is Albie Morgan. The 19-year-old broke into the side last season, becoming a regular in the side that clinched promotion, albeit he failed to make the squad at Wembley.

“No disrespect to who we are playing tonight, but I want Albie to grab that game by the scruff of the neck.

“He’s got so much ability, I want him to grab it and say I’m going to be the best player, but it’s just not happening.”

The manager was pleased with Alfie Doughty’s performance however, labelling his performance the best of the youngsters.

“He had good energy, he didn’t have the best final ball, and I can’t really remember him picking anyone out.

“But he got into good areas, and the most pleasing thing with me is when he did give it away, which all players do, his reaction was to win it back.

“Out of the young one he was the better one.”
