A serving police officer who watched porn at the home of a grieving family has been dismissed without notice.

Avi Maharaj, 44, downloaded four adult clips while at a property on February 11, 2018 following the death of a 14-year-old boy who was found at the address.

The Earlsfield officer's actions led the father to believe his son had been accessing pornography before his death, Southwark Crown Court heard on Thursday.

Pc Maharaj was supposed to be guarding the house at the time and waiting for the undertaker to take the body away when he used the family's Virgin Media account to download pornography worth £25.96.

He then falsified his attendance logs, claiming he left the property in Littleton Street, Earlsfield almost two hours earlier than he really did as part of a bid to cover up his actions.

The PC was dismissed when a misconduct hearing concluded on Monday, September 9.

PC Maharaj had previously pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 16. He was subsequently sentenced to 12 months in prison. His conviction follows an IOPC independent criminal investigation.

The Chair AC Helen Ball found that PC Maharaj had breached the standards of professional behaviour in respect of Discreditable Conduct.

The allegations against PC Maharaj were proven as gross misconduct.

The panel gave a sanction of a dismissal without notice
