A veterans' home in Surbiton was transformed last week as it marked the Chinese New Year and Burns' Night celebrations.
Residents at the Royal Star and Garter Veterans' home in Surbiton enjoyed two distinct cultural events either side of last weekend as the Chinese New Year and Scottish Burns Night celebrations arrived.
On Friday (January 24), a bagpiper serenaded residents as they tucked into haggis, 'neeps', and a dram or two of whisky.
Then on Monday it was time to ring in the Chinese Year of the Rat with a themed meal for residents surrounded by decorations that transformed the home with Red and Gold streamers and lanterns.
"It’s been a busy few days at the Home but it’s been great fun for everyone involved," Home Manager Helena Maher said after the celebrations wound down.
Maher pointed out how adding special events with sensory stimulations like live music and bright visuals can help residents at the care home feel more connected:
"By marking special events such as Burns Night and Chinese New Year we’re helping residents feel connected, engaged and stimulated," she said.
Burns Night 2020 and the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Rat both fell on the same date this year, January 25, a coincidence that reportedly won't happen again for another 76 years.
