The family of a teenager suffering from brittle bone disease are raising money to help go towards his specialist wheelchair.

Jack Huggett, 16, from Welling finds it too painful to go outside as the slightest bump can fracture his fragile bones.

The teen has been battling his condition since 13 months old, however, in the past year it has become increasingly worse.

Jack has also had to battle sepsis three times, failing kidneys, and what doctors believe to be a progressive and degenerative metabolic condition.

His conditions have affected both his eating and speaking - meaning Jack has to receive nutrition and medication through a tube.

To ease Jack's discomfort, the family are hoping to raise enough money to go towards a more cushioned and padded wheelchair.

In the meantime, children's charity Newlife have provided the family a short-term emergency loan of a specialist buggy.

Jack's mother, Stephanie Waters said: “Life can be very hard, but Jack is determined to fight for every moment.

News Shopper:

“Without the specialist buggy loan from Newlife right now he would be bed-bound, unable to go anywhere, we’d be trapped.

“Being confined to a bed would have such a detrimental impact on his physical and emotional well-being.

“It worries me that without this wheelchair Jack would give up fighting.

“Jack needs to be able to go to school and medical appointments; he wants to go out into the world to see everything and loves to meet people.

“To do any of this he needs a specialist buggy which can tilt backwards to reduce his pain and with padding, so his bones won’t fracture so easily.

“He even got a fracture from being pushed over a pavement bump in his old wheelchair, it’s awful to see.”

Jack also needs a buggy with space for all the medical equipment he needs with him at all times, including four litres of liquid nutrition given over 22 hours a day.

A spokesperson for New Life added: "Jack is just one of 51 children in the South East on our waiting list.

"He is in desperate need of specialist disability equipment costing a total of £33,873, so every penny we raise is so vital. "

Newlife and Jack's family are on a mission to help raise an additional £1,807, on top of a £1,250 voucher provided by Bexley Wheelchair services.
