Residents paid tribute to George Floyd by 'taking a knee' outside of Merton Civic Centre yesterday (June 3).

The gesture comes after Merton Council announced they would light the civic centre purple in memory of George Floyd and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

George Floyd, 46, was killed by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Monday, May 25.

Footage of his death in police custody sparked waves of protests against racism and police brutality in the US and around the world that continue unabated.

Wimbledon Times:

A campaign group called Stand Up to Racism urged brits to 'take the knee' on their doorsteps, on June 3, to show solidarity with those protesting in the US.

Pictures show Merton residents of all ages, united, taking a knee whilst holding up signs which read ' Black Lives Matter'.

Resident, John Colbert, helped organise the tribute alongside members of the council.

Speaking to Wimbledon Times, John Colbert, said: "Through our Wimbledon Labour contacts and social media, we put a note out asking for other communities across Merton to join us, and at short notice we had a small but dedicated couple of dozen people turn up.

"There was a fantastic vibe and mix from across the borough, all very peaceful and all very respectful and we held a minutes silence in respect.

"Merton is a real multi-cultural area and we wanted to celebrate that whilst being extremely mindful of terrible events in the US."
