A 19-year-old describes the Black Lives Matter protest which took place at Hyde Park on Wednesday ( June 3 ).

Kuana Ryan joined forces with thousands of other protesters to take a stand against racism and police brutality in response to George Floyd's death.

The 19-year-old joined other activists to protest in solidarity with the US; by holding signs, singing chants and 'taking a knee' alongside police officers.

Kuana says she protested amongst people of all races, with disabilities, and amongst children, and wanted to share the experience with people at home.

Speaking to Croydon Guardian, Kuana Ryan, said: "Over the last week or so, I have been documenting the Black Lives Matter movement on my social media.

"I have a very diverse following and it is important that people are made aware of the crisis black people are facing.

“The protest on Wednesday was peaceful and the atmosphere was very relaxed.

"The most moving part of the day, for me, was when a black police officer spoke about his dilemma between being a police officer and backing the millions of people who disagree with institutional racism that exists within the force.

"As a symbol of joining the people, he placed his hat on the floor, it honestly brought me to tears, it took a lot of courage.

“Everyone came together with the same goal in mind, it felt like we could make a difference.

"It felt like us against the injustice, it felt like a world problem, everyone understood why we were there.

"There is no reason to be silent, if you can't protest, you can donate, and if you can't donate you can sign a petition.

"I understand that it can be uncomfortable for people, particularly, non-black people, to have conversations about racism- but for change to happen these conversations need to be had.

“I have also composed a template for those who would like to email their MPs, in regards to reopening Belly Mujinga's investigation.”
