Lambeth Council has urged people to dispose of their rubbish after workers spent hours cleaning up the mess left on Clapham Common over the weekend.

Photographs posted online showing rubbish strewn all over the Common were shared thousands of times, while people branded the behaviour “disgusting” and a “disgrace”.

It followed an illegal gathering on the Common, which led police to put a dispersal zone in place on Saturday night (June 27).

On Sunday (June 28) a spokesperson for the council said: “Have a nice time at the Common yesterday? Cheeky lie in this morning?

“Good for you, meanwhile our teams have been out all morning trying to clear up the mess you left behind. Bins full? Take it home. Can’t take it home? Fill a bag and leave it by the bins.”

Tom Morgan, who posted a photo of a council worker picking up the discarded waste, said: “The sheer volume of broken glass, rubbish and human excrement can’t even be put into words, and pictures do not do it justice.”

Another person said: “Literally how hard is it to put your crusty tub of hummus and £7 bottle of Prosecco from Tesco in the bin you ANIMALS.

One said: “Do these people think they’re at festivals with teams of litter pickers following them around all day?? How absolutely disgusting they are. I can’t believe how bad this is. And it’s nationwide!”

People have been flocking to parks as lockdown eases, bringing a slew of issues with rubbish and anti-social behaviour.

In Lewisham, councillors called for a park to close last week after complaints about late-night noise, littering on a “festival scale”, and “widespread human soiling”.

Lewisham Council then decided to close Upper Park in Telegraph Hill at 8pm in a bid to help the parks team manage the situation, while also adding extra security.
