A teenager convicted of manslaughter after a 37-year-old man was killed in a dispute over drugs has had his sentence cut by appeal judges.

Alfie Caparn, now 19, of Streatham, south-west London, had been given an 18-year custodial term after Wesley Adyinka was killed in Maidstone, Kent, in February 2019.

But three appeal judges on Tuesday ruled the term should be reduced to 12 years after a hearing at the Court of Appeal in London.

Caparn was one of four people involved in the killing who had been jailed by judge Adele Williams in January following a trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

Wandsworth Times:

Kevin Roach, then 40, was given a 27-year jail term after being convicted of murder.

The trial heard he stabbed Mr Adyinka.

Julian Grant, then 28, was given a 20-year term after being convicted of manslaughter.

Rodney Harris, then 38, was given an 18-year jail term after being convicted of manslaughter.

Caparn, who was 17 when Mr Adyinka died, appealed against the length of his sentence.

Wandsworth Times:

Lawyers representing him argued Ms Williams had not fully taken into account his age and level of maturity.

They said he had been been "vulnerable" and exploited and groomed by older associates.

Appeal judges Lord Justice Bean, Mr Justice Lavender and Mrs Justice Cockerill upheld Caparn's challenge, quashed the 18-year sentence and imposed a 12-year term.
