Sophia Ali, 8, and Mahdi Ali, 6, started the ‘Take Steps’ challenge this September to support those affected by lung disease during the coronavirus crisis.

After an unusual year, the siblings took time to reflect on what they enjoyed the most: cycling, running and walking.

And with the new traffic measures in Wandsworth, and growing concerns about the environment, the family realised that the way they travel needed to change.

Sophia and Mahdi suggested actively travelling to school and clubs, to avoid car use.

They have now pledged to walk 50km to fulfil the challenge and are determined to continue actively travelling beyond September.

At the start of the challenge, Mahdi, 6 said:

“I’m really excited about walking and being active and raising money for the British Lung Foundation. My mum works for the NHS and helps people with lung problems so I want to help them too.”

The children have been learning about habitats and are aware that the climate crisis has threatened many plant and animal species with extinction.

Sophia, who attends Finton House School, said:

“I’m really worried about the environment and air pollution. It is everyone’s responsibility to respond to the climate crisis. We decided to take on the Take Steps Challenge and I’m really happy to be on top of the leaderboard.”

In addition to walking to and from school, the siblings have taken steps in the local green spaces and explored London by foot.

They have raised over £1000 so far, with every £57 paying for a nurse to work on the helpline for an hour, providing crucial medical advice and support to people with lung conditions.
