Controversial plans to allow a nightclub to remain open until 5am have been given the go-ahead - despite concerns from the police it could lead to a rise in crime.

Mail readers have been giving their views on the plans.

Mike Downs said: “With the level of disorder in Barrow associated with drinking and where the town sits nationally on alcohol related crime and disorder I’m shocked that anyone would even consider a change let alone grant it.”

Ryan Castle said: “Surely this cannot open at all now with our levels of Coronavirus? Can they guarantee social distancing in a night club?”

Mark Towns said: “This is unbelievable, why does Barrow need to be able to drink until 5am en mass? There is already a large amount of trouble in that area in the early hours of the morning. I’m personally aware that a responsible local taxi firm objected on mass circa 40 odd drivers to this based on quality of life to workers and the concern of further disorder associated with the night time economy already in that area. For the council to totally ignore the concerns of the police, the street angles who see this first hand is incredible - another great decision by the council.”

Rennie Lisp said: “So in a time of crisis you allow late opening? Violence in Barrow has been on the increase and police stretched. Which idiots voted for this ?All agency statutory and volunteer were against this."

Phil Brooks said: “This cannot be true surely, if it is its disgusting. Covid 19 is rife again and these idiots are allowing this to happen.”

Lee Bowman said: “Who wants to dance at 5am in the morning? Get to bed!”
