A courageous cancer survivor from Southfields is taking on a mammoth running challenge to raise funds for charity.

Charlie Degale will be taking on the 4x4x48 race in King George’s Park this weekend.

Invented by American running enthusiast David Goggins, the goal is to run four miles every four hours over the course of two days.

Athletes from around the world will be taking part in the 48-mile race.

Mr Degale will start at 4am on Friday, March 5 and hopes to finish at the same time on Monday, March 8.

He will be raising funds for Black Women and Black Men Rising, a charity which supports men, women and children in the BAME community who have been affected by cancer.

Mr Degale said the UK charity helped him grapple with his “traumatic” experience with cancer four years ago.

“Black Men and Black Women Rising helped me to speak openly and honestly about my cancer experience and come to terms with it mentally.

“The charity provides vital support and projects to help men, women and children in the BAME community who are going through, or have gone through, cancer,” said the runner.

Mr Degale has run for various causes in the past, including the London Marathon dressed in a bell costume for Children with Cancer UK.

However, he added that it’s more vital than ever to assist charities.

“I am raising money to keep the important support groups that the charity provides going throughout the pandemic.

“This has been highlighted by charities struggling financially during this period.

“Please, please visit the justgiving link to donate and if you fancy doing some exercise over that weekend, come and join me in the King George's Park for a social distanced run!”
