CROYDON residents have had their say after the town was voted in the top 20 worst places to live in England.

The town has been ranked the 17th worst place in a new 2022 survey by the satirical website I Live Here, with a total of 110,172 votes cast in the survey.

Your Local Guardian readers have given their views on whether they agree with the ranking or not.

Croydon is the only town in south London to be listed in the top 50.

Here are some comments from those who disagree with the ranking:

Sheila El Magazine said: “Croydon has great transport links, an array of very good restaurants and cafes, a large number of parks and a lot of good friendly people.

“The trouble is that the council has not enough money to deal with social problems, keep the parks in good shape.

“Most importantly, the centre of the town is being swamped with very large buildings and the Whitgift Centre is being allowed to deteriorate.

“Better planning of developments is needed.”

Amanda Blewett said: “I don't agree ain't that bad.”

Graham Norris said: “Croydon ain't too bad.

“If you keep saying negative stuff eventually that's what it becomes.

“Try posting some positive news about the place.”

Meanwhile, some readers were not quite as supportive of Croydon.

Here are some of those comments:

Nicholas Afuwape said: “What a surprise.”

David Holden said: “Like many others, I was born in Croydon.

“Families had stalls in the market when it was thriving, and the High Street was booming but now all you have is shops closed down people sleeping on mattresses and sitting around drinking alcohol not a very pretty picture.”

Lisa Ellen Brown said: “True”

Tony Holland said: “Surely it’s in the top 5.”

Hilary Mansfield said: “Croydon has gone downhill big time.”

Jennifer Starnes said: “Croydon is now a disgusting place to live in.”
