A woman died after being pulled from a south London house fire which “completely destroyed” half of the building’s first floor.

The London Fire Brigade was called to Railton Road, between Herne Hill and Brixton, shortly after 4am this morning.

Around 25 firefighters tackled the blaze at a mid-terraced, two-storey house.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman from the first floor, who sadly died at the scene.

Two men managed to leave the property before the Brigade’s arrival and did not sustain any injuries.

A spokesperson for LFB said: “The Brigade was called at 0408 and four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended, the fire was under control by 0503.

“Fire crews from Acton, Clapham, Peckham and West Norwood fire stations attended the scene."

The cause of the fire will be investigated by the London Fire Brigade.
