If you have been watching the news lately or have been on social media, then you may have heard about what is happening in Iran at this time. For just over ten weeks there have been protests throughout the country of Iran, first stemming from Saqqez and Tehan that have now spread to other cities in the province of Kurdistan and the rest of Iran.

These series of protests and demonstrations all started as a reaction to the events that took place between the 13th and 16th of September, 2022. On the 13th, 22 year-old Mahsa Amini, an Iranian women, was arrested in Iran by morality police. Amini was arrested for wearing a hijab that did not meet government standards. After Mahsa's arrest, eyewitnesses, many who were detained with Amini, reported that she was critically beaten by the police. Mahs was then transferred to hospital where she fell into a coma and, unfortunately, died three days later.

These tragic events sparked many protests, as countless Muslim women have taken to burning their hijabs and cutting their hair to demonstrate that they will not be silenced and that action must be taken to prevent this from continueing.

As a result, by the start of November 2022, just over 300 people have been killed by the police. The Iranian Government have also implimented internet blackouts and restrictions on social media nationwide. This however, has not stopped footage of police brutality and protests from within Iran from spreading to other countries.
