Thomas’s London Day Schools – Pioneering education for over 50 years

It all began with a vision and an unwavering dedication to turn this vision into a reality. With a growing reputation and increasing demand for places, Thomas’s first Prep School opened in 1977 in Cadogan Gardens. Joanna and her ex-Army husband, David, drew on their respective artistic and sporting backgrounds to create an enriched, holistic curriculum that championed artistic expression, outdoor learning, and physical activity.

As the years passed, the curriculum evolved, expanding beyond its foundations in the arts and sport to embrace an innovative four-dimensional educational model: Knowledge, Key Skills, Character, and Meta-Learning. This approach ensures that pupils develop not only academically but also in resilience, creativity, and self-awareness.

(Image: Thomas’s London Day Schools) Outdoor education has remained central to Thomas’s philosophy, and in 2017, this commitment was formalised with the purchase of Thomas’s Daheim in the Wurzeralm ski resort in Austria - a location that had been a staple of school trips for over 25 years. Today, pupils embark on a journey from woodland adventures in Reception to the Young Explorers programme in the Middle School, culminating in a week-long residential trip at Daheim. These experiences provide invaluable lessons beyond the classroom, nurturing independence and teamwork.

With the six schools (including Thomas’s Kensington moving to an exceptional new site at Atlantic House) and the forthcoming launch of Thomas’s College this September, the vision of providing a broad education for ages 2 to 18 is finally being realised.

Families will have the choice to create a programme that blends traditional GCSEs and A Levels with Thomas’s Qualifications - designed to equip students with essential skills for the future. Meaningful choice starts in Year 9, and no subjects will be restricted to sixth form.

This is a ground-breaking programme that’s nevertheless designed around a keystone of traditional excellence. Thomas's College will do things differently and better, while preserving the best existing provision to support the ambition and aspiration of all.
