Tooting Market is appealing for local designers and community groups to take part in the building’s new “Camden”-style makeover.

The market’s new management aims to attract creative businesses similar to those found in the iconic Stables Market in the hope of bringing in a new crowd.

It also plans to let community groups use the central courtyard space to put on performances at the weekends.

Roi Mengelgrein, market consultant, said: “If anyone has any ideas and wants to have a try, we are flexible. We are willing to discuss things with you and create something special.”

One of the newest stall-holders in the market is Susan Forrester, a 46-year-old mum who makes her own African-style clothes.

Susan, who learnt how to “hand-cut” clothes without using a pattern in her native Ghana, set up her own business at the market three months ago.

She said: “I do lots of weddings and birthdays. I love seeing people look good - it gives me joy.”
