More than 1,000 runners hot-footed it to Battersea Park for a special race - which 300 people completed barefoot.

The sixth annual Tree-Athlon event, organised by the environmental charity Trees for Cities, saw the shoe-less runners attempt to set a new record for largest ever barefoot race.

The attempt is currently being assessed by Guinness World Record officials.

The Tree-Athlon sees entrants take on a 5km run, make a tree wish and then take home a sapling to plant.

Television presenter and participant Ben Fogle said: “I strongly support Trees for Cities' work and I am a true believer that we all need more green spaces in cities and healthier surroundings.

“Being part of the barefoot run at the Tree-Athlon with Tom Aikens (a Michelin star celebrity chef) is fantastic, and I can’t wait to see more trees planted in our cities as a result.”
