A community mural will be created in a burnt-out shop to mark the anniversary of last year's riots.

The project aims to bring people together through art to create the artwork in the boarded-up Party Superstore shop, in Lavender Hill, Battersea.

Roopa Basu, an art director, has been commissioned by the council to design the mural which he has been planning since February.

Everyone will be invited to pick up a brush and paint the wall which will celebrate the sense of community in the Clapham Junction area.

It will work as a paint-by-numbers activity but on a grander scale, and has been given the name I Art This.

A group of designers will be on hand to encourage people to take part, as well as maintaining the design as a whole.

Ms Basu said: "The aim is to get as much participation as possible where a community comes together for a creative endeavour.

"All of us involved in the project strongly feel that this is a great opportunity to get the community together to support a creative cause."

The mural will be created on August 11 from 3pm-6pm and August 12 from 11am-7pm.
