WhatsApp has warned users they could be permanently banned if they are caught using unofficial dupes of the app.
The warning comes after certain iPhone users, operating on old iOS software, have been left unable to access the messaging app.
As of Monday (May 5), users must have iOS 15.1 or above to continue using WhatsApp.
Several older iPhones models were majorly affected by this change as they are unable to update to iOS 15.1.
The affected iPhone models are:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
While a majority of Brits have a newer model, around 36% still have one of the older iPhones that are no longer able to access WhatsApp, according to our recent poll.
WhatsApp users warned not to use fake apps
WhatsApp users are now being warned not to use fake or unofficial dupes of the messaging app as a way around Monday's change.
WhatsApp, via its website, said: "Unofficial apps are fake WhatsApp apps, developed by third parties which violate our Terms of Service.
"We don't support these apps because we can't validate their security practices."
These unofficial/fake apps include the likes of GBWhatsApp and WhatsApp Plus, according to The Sun.

What happens if you use an unofficial/fake WhatsApp app?
Using these unofficial WhatsApp apps could mean:
- Your privacy and security is at risk as the apps carry malware that can steal your data, and damage your phone.
- There’s no guarantee your messages or data (including your location or files shared) will be private and secure.
- Your account might also be temporarily or permanently banned.
