Yoann Barbet revealed Arsenal defender Stephan Lichtsteiner told him not to dive – but was “100 percent sure” he was fouled – in Brentford’s Carabao Cup defeat.

The 25-year-old went down after battling for the ball as calls for a penalty late into the closely fought game ensued.

He told of how he was running for the ball and went down because he thought he’d been fouled, but perhaps “pushed the ball” a little too far ahead of him.

Referee Mike Dean dismissed the appeals while heated words were exchanged amid late controversy in the cup clash, which saw Alan Judge hit a stunning free-kick.

Barbet said: “Lichtsteiner told me not to dive but it wasn't a dive, so I just tried to get a penalty which I thought I deserved but the referee didn't blow the whistle.”

When asked whether he thought it was a penalty, he added: “Honestly, I don't even know if I was in the box or outside the box but I'm 100 percent sure it was a foul.”

Lichtsteiner, who arrived at Arsenal from Juventus during the summer transfer window, put the scuffle down to emotions.

When he was asked what happened, he said: “Nothing, it's just football. It's emotional. Sometimes you have duels, after the game everything is okay and we go for a beer.”

Substitute Alexandre Lacazette finished off the tie with a late goal, following Danny Welbeck's brace, as Judge’s free-kick sparked hopes of an upset.
