Despite coming agonisingly close to toppling current World Champions New Zealand at a rain drenched Twickenham last Saturday, Croydon's very own Elliot Daly reckons England are progressing towards the right direction.

The hosts were denied which could well have been a match-winning try by flanker Sam Underhill four minutes from time but was controversially ruled out after television replays showed that Courtney Lawes was judged to be narrowly offside.

Tries from Chris Ashton and co-captain Dylan Hartley saw The Red & Whites storm into a stunning 15-0 lead after 25 minutes before the mighty All Blacks rallied together and claimed a dramatic 16-15 victory.

"The performance showed what we can do in some tough conditions," said the 26-year-old full back who plays his club rugby for Wasps.

"We were ahead for long periods in the game until we were one point down."

And the former Cumnor House and Whitgift School pupil gave his thoughts on Underhill's disallowed try.

"You just play the play and obviously Sam's gone the length and put some good footwork on and scored in the corner," he continued. "Obviously great finish from him but once the day the TMO comes in for things to make the right decisions and unfortunately it didn't go our way.

"I think the first half we can take a lot of positives. 25 minutes in and we're 15-0 up and to do that to the world champions obviously it's credit to us but we probably need to look at the game and see where we went wrong.

"The way we played we're grown as a team. Obviously you want to win every game but you're not going to win every game so we are going to look at what we did right against a very good team and push on from that."

England, who are led by highly-respectable coach Eddie Jones, continue their Quilter Autumn Internationals campaign against 2019 Rugby World Cup hosts Japan this Saturday at Twickenham.
