Wild celebrations were seen from Aston Villa, Derby County, and Charlton Athletic as they booked their place at Wembley this coming weekend.

As Villa and Derby do battle in the Championship play-off on Monday, Charlton face a side in the League One play-off whose semi-final celebrations were far from jubilant.

For Sunderland and their goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, they’re fully aware of the task in hand, and that’s why the celebrations at Fratton Park when they bested Portsmouth over two legs were comparatively muted.

“We know that we've achieved nothing so far,” McLaughlin told the Sunderland Echo.

“That's why the celebrations weren't crazy when we won the game.

“Of course, we're delighted to get through such a test and give ourselves a shot, it's big.”

For Sunderland it’ll be their second trip to the national stadium this season as they were beaten on penalties by Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy last month.

An experience that ultimately could prove perfect preparation for the Black Cats as they look to bounce back to the Championship at eh first attempt.

“We've gone to Wembley and had a taste of that, we know what it's all about, and hopefully we can use that experience as well,” McLaughlin continued.

“It was the same with Bradford when I was there, we lost the League Cup final but went on to win the play-offs.

“We'd had our Wembley experience, got all the stars in your eyes stuff out the way, and really focused.

“It's going to be tough again against a very good team.

“They've been tough games when we've played them.

“We've not lost so we know it'll be tough, but that we've got enough in the locker to achieve what we want to achieve which is promotion.”

The goalkeeper realises the magnitude of the occasion at Wembley and the pressure on his side to get promotion.

“If we don't get promotion it'll be seen as a failure, we know that and understand the pressure of that, but we've got the opportunity to do it.”

Sunderland's celebrations were in stark contrast to Charlton's pitch invasion following their 4-3 penalty shootout win over Doncaster Rovers at The Valley on Friday night.

McLaughlin's opposite number and hero of the night, Dillon Phillips, admitted the celebrations were far from planned.

"When you win like we did it’s hard not to celebrate," he said.

"We were jumping around like lunatics, we were buzzing!

“In the heat of the moment, it’s hard to not celebrate!"
