Bristol City boss Lee Johnson revealed that Brentford’s Bryan Mbuemo was on their shopping list in the summer.
According to the Robins boss the 20-year-old was on their watchlist whilst at Troyes, but it was Thomas Frank and Brentford who swooped to land the attacker.
The Frenchman has impressed at Griffin Park since his arrival from in August, and according to the Johnson he may well have been lining up against his current employers on Wednesday night had things turned out differently.
“They made a good signing in Bryan Mbeumo – a player that I liked a lot,” Johnson said.
“He wasn’t one that we became interested in but he was certainly one on our watchlist.
“And they’ve obviously got a similar type theme as us: buy the young players, develop them, put them together and hope they do the business.”
Mbuemo featured in every game this season before missing Sunday’s trip to Barnsley, scoring one and assisting another.
Bristol travel to West London in eighth place, looking to bounce back from surrendering a two-goal lead at Preston on Saturday.
Ahead of taking on Frank’s side who’ll be buoyed by Sunday’s emphatic 3-1 win at Barnsley, Johnson admitted he was aware of the challenge ahead of them.
“I think it will be a really tough game again.
“But the spirit our lads have shown has been really good and I hope that continues.”
“I watched them [Brentford] first game of the season against Birmingham and I thought they were excellent in how they moved the ball as you’d expect from a Brentford side.”
