The conflicts of Crossrail 2 continue on as the consultation reaches its final days.

Crossrail 2 consultation closes January 8. Answer here.

Since the consultation was launched with the "preferred option" of Balham for the Wandsworth station instead of Tooting Broadway, heated debate has ensued between both sides.

Transport for London has said that a station at Tooting Broadway is no longer possible because of ground conditions.

According to TfL, the station construction there would cost twice as much as at Balham and take two years longer.

A campaign group called 'Save Our Balham' argues that Balham does not need the Crossrail 2 station, as it already has good transport links.

The group states: "At best, from the 2030's, a Crossrail 2 station may offer some modest transport benefit to Balham residents, but it will also mean massive traffic congestion, major disruption across Balham and years of planning uncertainty."

The group claims that shops and businesses will be impacted, and there will be "no more Waitrose".

The Save Wandsworth Common campaign also resurfaced, when it was realised that a shaft would be built on the common near Bolingbrooke Grove if the line was routed through Balham instead of Tooting Broadway, where the shaft had been relocated.

St George's Hospital trust and Tooting MP Sadiq Khan are both in favour of a station at Tooting Broadway instead of Balham.

Wandsworth Council has also been a campaigning force for Tooting Broadway since the consultation launched in October.

In contrast, the support for the station at Balham has been propelled on Twitter by the @crossrailBalham account and includes arguments relating to cost and congestion on the Northern Line.

It claims: "Hope you get a seat on your morning commute to work? Won't happen if Crossrail 2 goes to Tooting."

The consultation will close tomorrow, January 8.
